Work-Appropriate Heels

To women, shoes (much like handbags) are a religion unto themselves. And high heels or pumps, are the variety that have a cultish following. In the professional ranks they are almost de rigueur. So, what’s the key to wearing heels at work? Pick the right style, and heel height for the right function. Heels can transform a drab professional outfit to fiendishly chic in seconds. And a stacked mary-jane heel can make a tradeshow floor almost bearable.

Rupert Sanderson & Kenneth Cole Reaction have two chic, stacked heels in their collection.

Additionally, it’s important to understand how you walk, how much you’ll walk (or stand) in your heels and how your foot is shaped. I for instance have a tiny heel. Which means high heels can easily slip off. Therefore any shoe with an ankle wrap is heaven for me. However, because I’m not six feet tall, I also have to be careful that the ankle wrap doesn’t cut my leg off. So much to think about!!! But seriously, you have to take all of these things into consideration. If you plan on walking a lot, for God’s sake don’t pick a high-end Italian shoe with a paper-thin leather sole! Opt for a Cole Haan with Nike technology to carry you through the day.

Take a moment to understand what it is that hurts on your foot at the end of a day of wearing heels. If your toes are crushed by 3 p.m., you’re probably slipping in your shoes. There are a multitude of aids to help with this BUT make sure you know this in advance as those very same aids will take room away from the inside of the shoes making it tighter.

Learn to walk in heels. Not everyone was blessed with a squadron of Fashionista ex-beauty queens for cousins who were willing to drill you for hours to learn how to walk in heels. There ARE people out there that can teach you. Find yourself a coach. I can’t tell you how many fashion disasters I see almost toppling over in heels. And I will say that even the experts take their spills in heels – So take it easy when you’re out there walking in heels.

Pay attention to the shoe style and color. If you are planning on wearing prints pick a solid-colored shoe. If you want to wear your rocking animal-print heels, do not overdo it with a printed blouse or excessive jewelry. Keep it simple with a chic black dress. The more neutral your outfit is, the more you can get away with a strong heel and vice versa.

Try Giuseppe Zanotti's Leopard-print calf hair pumps or Jimmy Choo's Quiet patent-leather pumps to spice up your work wardrobe!

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, high heels aren’t going anywhere fast so indulge or slowly learn to love them. They have their uses for the right time and occasion and they truly do wonders for a woman’s silhouette.
